PSL 12 Workshop to Set Auction, Signing Rules

PSL 12 workshop to discuss auction and signing rules

A workshop on the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 12 will be held on October 29, with all eight franchises taking part, sources told Geo Super on Wednesday.

Discussions will cover auction rules, the tournament schedule, tournament operations and direct signings. The workshop comes at a key stage in pre-season planning, with the player auction and the direct-signing window both still open.

The development comes four days after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the opening of the direct-signing window until November 23. The player auction is set to be staged on January 23 next year.

What direct signings mean for franchises

Under the pre-season roadmap, each franchise will be allowed to sign one marquee player directly, provided the player did not feature in either PSL 10 or PSL 11.

That rule shapes the workshop agenda. Franchises must agree how the direct-signing window works alongside the auction, so that no team gains an unfair edge before bidding begins. They must also settle how the marquee rule is checked, since a player who appeared in either of the last two seasons cannot be signed directly.

For fans, the direct-signing window is the first sign of how squads will look. A marquee signing can change a team’s balance before a single ball is bowled at auction. For franchises, it is a chance to secure a star name early, but only within the limits the PCB has set.

The workshop will also discuss the tournament schedule and operations. With eight teams now in the league, fixture planning, venues and travel all need agreement well before the season starts.

Dates already confirmed

The dates for the 12th edition have already been announced. The eight-team tournament is scheduled to run from March 18 to May 2.

The tournament window was confirmed last month after consultations with key stakeholders during the PSL Governing Council meeting in London on September 1, 2026. Owners and representatives of all eight franchises attended that meeting.

That early confirmation gave franchises a clear window to plan around. The October 29 workshop now fills in the detail: how players are signed, how the auction is run, and how the tournament itself is operated.

Building on PSL 11

PSL 12 will build on the 11th edition, which saw the eight-team format introduced for the first time. The 2026 season also featured the league’s maiden player auction, replacing the previous draft system.

The final at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium attracted a record crowd of 32,461 spectators. Peshawar Zalmi were crowned champions after defeating debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen by five wickets in the final on May 3, ending a nine-year wait for the title.

Those figures set the bar for PSL 12. The eight-team format is no longer new, and the auction is no longer an experiment. Franchises and the PCB will be judged on whether the second auction runs more smoothly than the first, and whether the expanded league keeps its crowds.

The record final crowd also matters for scheduling. A tournament that runs from mid-March to early May must balance home fixtures, travel and broadcast needs across eight teams, while keeping the final as the showcase event.

What to watch from the workshop

Three outcomes will matter most. First, clear auction rules, so franchises know the purse, retention limits and bidding order before January 23. Second, a settled direct-signing process, so the November 23 deadline passes without dispute. Third, a workable schedule that fits eight teams into the March 18 to May 2 window.

If the workshop settles those three points, the pre-season can move in an orderly way from signings to auction to the tournament itself. If it leaves them open, the same questions will return, closer to the auction date, when there is less room to fix them.

The workshop is not a public event, and its decisions will emerge through PCB announcements and franchise moves. But its agenda shows the league is now in its detailed planning phase, with the headline dates already fixed and the rules still to be agreed.
