Carrick and Fernandes hold talks after Manchester United rift
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has held a meeting with club captain Bruno Fernandes to clear the air, after a public row over tactics and a benching that deepened the club’s crisis.
The meeting took place at Carrington on Wednesday, according to a report by the Daily Mail cited by Geo Super. It followed a difficult week for Fernandes, on and off the pitch.
United have not won a match in their last eight games in all competitions. Carrick was under pressure after the latest defeat, but the club hierarchy decided not to sack him.
The Como criticism
The row began after United’s 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League. Fernandes was substituted shortly after the hour mark in Italy, and then criticised the team’s tactics in public.
“It’s a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, wait for them,” Fernandes said.
“It’s not the first time. We started on the wrong foot and they scored very early. Not much pressure on the ball, not many good movements with the ball, not many things going our way.”
He added: “Conceding early makes us go into game with a mood of defeat, it’s difficult to get out of that, trying to be brave, to have the ball and make something happen. If we are not able to do that, it is going to be very difficult to get out of this situation.”
Those remarks, from a club captain, were a direct challenge to the coaching staff’s approach. They also came after a heavy European defeat, when scrutiny of Carrick was already intense.
Benched for Bournemouth
The next step made the rift visible to everyone. Carrick confirmed that Fernandes was fit and available for Sunday’s match against Bournemouth at Old Trafford. Fernandes did not start. United lost 3-0.
Not playing despite being available was a clear indication that the Portugal star was being punished for speaking against his coach’s tactics, Geo Super reported.
In football, team selection is often the loudest statement a manager can make. A fit captain left on the bench, after publicly criticising tactics, leaves little room for doubt about the reason.
The defeat itself added to the pressure. A 3-0 home loss, with the captain unused, raised questions about both the decision and the direction of the team.
A difficult week off the pitch
Fernandes also endured a personal blow during the same week. He discovered that his home in Cheshire had been burgled by a gang on the night of the match against Como.
According to the Daily Mail report, Fernandes is now mentally relaxed after the meeting with Carrick, having endured a week in which he had a disagreement with his coach and then faced the burglary.
That detail matters for context. A player dealing with a break-in at his home, a public row with his manager and a run of poor results is under strain from several directions at once.
What the meeting means
The Carrington meeting was an attempt to solve the issues by talking, rather than letting them harden into a permanent split. For Carrick, keeping his captain on side matters, because Fernandes remains the team’s most influential player on the pitch.
For Fernandes, the meeting offers a route back into the side without a further public exchange. Neither man has, in the reporting so far, given a detailed account of what was agreed.
The wider problem remains untouched by one meeting. United have gone eight games without a win in all competitions. A conversation between manager and captain can repair a relationship. It cannot, on its own, repair results.
Why was Fernandes benched against Bournemouth?
Carrick had confirmed Fernandes was fit and available, but left him on the bench for the 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford, which Geo Super reported as punishment for his criticism of the tactics after the Como defeat.
What did Fernandes say after the Como match?
He criticised the decision not to press man to man, said United started on the wrong foot and conceded early, and said there was not much pressure on the ball or good movement with it.
Has Carrick been sacked?
No. The club hierarchy decided not to sack him after the Bournemouth game, despite United going eight matches without a win in all competitions.
