Shadman 99 Not Out as Bangladesh Dominate Day One

Shadman 99 not out as Bangladesh dominate day one

Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam remained unbeaten on 99 as the hosts ended the opening day of the first Test against West Indies in a commanding position at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday, 28 October 2026.

After opting to bat first, Bangladesh reached 213 for three in 74 overs. Shadman, one run short of his century, faced 219 deliveries and struck 10 boundaries during a composed innings.

He will resume on day two alongside wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das, who remained unbeaten on 10 off 28 balls, including one boundary. Bangladesh will look to build on their solid start.

An early setback, then recovery

The hosts endured an early setback. West Indies pacer Jayden Seales dismissed Tanzid Hasan for seven off 23 deliveries in the seventh over.

Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque then rebuilt Bangladesh’s innings. The pair put on 59 runs for the second wicket, taking the hosts beyond the 50-run mark.

Jomel Warrican brought that partnership to an end. He dismissed Mominul for 28 off 51 deliveries, including two fours, leaving Bangladesh at 68 for two after 21.2 overs.

Shadman continued to lead the recovery. He brought up his 10th half-century in Test cricket as Bangladesh crossed the 100-run mark. His innings was built on patience rather than risk, with 10 boundaries spread across 219 balls.

Shanto falls, Hridoy stretchered off

Shadman found valuable support from captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who contributed 19 off 42 deliveries, including one boundary. Warrican struck again to remove Shanto, leaving Bangladesh three wickets down and giving West Indies an opportunity to regain control.

Hridoy then joined Shadman at the crease and batted with positive intent. He helped Bangladesh strengthen their position during the final session, scoring 42 runs. He had to be stretchered off after suffering calf cramps in the scorching heat.

That incident was a reminder of the conditions at Mirpur. Heat, not just the bowling, tested the players on day one.

The day’s play was also disrupted by poor light. The first interruption lasted 50 minutes, before play was halted again after just four additional overs.

Why day two matters more than day one

A score of 213 for three looks strong, but it is not yet decisive. Shadman stands one run from a century, and Litton Das is new at the crease. The first hour of day two will decide whether Bangladesh turn a good start into a large first-innings total, or let West Indies back into the match with early wickets.

If Shadman reaches his century and builds a long innings with Litton, Bangladesh can bat West Indies out of the game on a Mirpur pitch that may offer more help to spinners later. If West Indies strike early, the balance shifts fast, and a score that looks comfortable can suddenly look short.

Shadman’s discipline on day one gives Bangladesh the platform. He saw off the new ball, rebuilt after the early loss of Tanzid, and carried the innings through two further wickets. That is the role of an opening batter in Test cricket, and he played it well.

West Indies, for their part, will take some encouragement from Warrican’s two wickets and Seales’s early strike. They kept Bangladesh to three wickets down, but they could not break the Shadman stand that defined the day.

The Test is only one day old. Yet the shape of the match already turns on one man, one run short of a hundred, walking out again in the morning.
