Faryal Talpur to Steer PPP Punjab Ahead of LG Polls

Faryal Talpur has taken on a bigger role in running the Pakistan Peoples Party in Punjab, with party sources saying she now oversees the province’s organisation. The Sindh Assembly member and sister of President Asif Ali Zardari is expected to visit Lahore on November 10 and 11, in what sources describe as a more hands-on presence in the province.

Talpur heads the party’s women’s wing. Party sources regard her as the third most powerful figure in the PPP, after Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari. Until now, Punjab’s organisation sat under the chairman’s direct control. Sources say that charge has now passed to Talpur.

Faryal Talpur and the Lahore visit

The Lahore visit, according to party sources, will last two days. Some sources say it could become a monthly feature, with two to three days in the province each month. A second source was less certain, and said it was not clear yet whether she would visit every month.

The visit is tied to a family event: Talpur will attend the wedding of Nawab Shehzad’s child. They believe the trip will mark her formal entry into Punjab politics. A schedule of meetings has already been prepared for district-level organisations, mainly from nearby districts, with Sahiwal as the exception.

Ticket-holders will also be invited. The list includes candidates for National Assembly seats who secured around 30,000 votes, and provincial assembly candidates who obtained about 20,000 votes. PPP Punjab General Secretary Hasan Murtaza will brief Talpur on the party’s organisational structure in the province and the overall political situation.

The party’s Central Punjab secretariat is being prepared for her arrival, with extensive renovation to accommodate Talpur and her staff. The general secretary’s office on the first floor has been allocated to her, access to the whole floor during her stay will be restricted to people with prior clearance, and mid-tier leaders who share the secretariat are bearing the renovation costs.

Why Punjab organisation matters now

The timing matters because local government elections are on the horizon. A party that wants to contest council seats across Punjab needs district organisations that can select candidates, settle disputes and run campaigns. That work cannot wait until election schedules are announced, and it cannot be run from Islamabad alone.

Talpur has already been holding meetings in Islamabad with representatives of the party’s Punjab chapters. Those meetings covered the People’s Youth Organisation, the women’s wing and office-bearers from Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Sialkot and Faisalabad. Complaints raised by party office-bearers were also discussed.

Speculation about her Punjab role first emerged in early October, when word spread that she would visit Lahore in the first or second week of that month. The imposition of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the second week of October pushed that speculation aside. The recent round of Islamabad meetings, however, has given fresh weight to reports that she now holds the driving seat in Punjab.

One party leader said her presence was a good omen for the PPP in Punjab, particularly as local government elections approach. The leader argued that decisions routed through the chairman often took time, costing party workers momentum. Talpur, the leader said, is well versed in street politics, and her leadership during the local government elections would be a major asset for the party.
