UK Skilled Worker Visa Family Rules Tightened for 2026
The United Kingdom has clarified what partners and children of Skilled Worker visa holders must meet to join them, and the list goes well beyond paperwork. The UK skilled worker visa family rules set out the savings families must show, and they bar workers in most medium-skilled and newer care jobs from bringing dependants at all.
The requirements come from the UK government’s Immigration Rules Appendix Skilled Worker, and they matter for thousands of Pakistani professionals, nurses and care workers who use the route to move to Britain with their families.
Who can bring their family
A dependant can be a spouse, civil partner or unmarried partner, or a child under 18. Partners must be 18 or older and prove a marriage, civil partnership, or two-year relationship. Children must live with the Skilled Worker, unless away in full-time education, and must not be married.
Care workers and senior care workers can only bring a partner or children from abroad if continuously employed on a Skilled Worker visa in that role since before March 11, 2024, or if the child was born in the UK. The same cut-off applies to medium-skilled jobs, with July 22, 2025 as the date, and prison officers extending or switching visas are an exception. Anyone offered such a role today should check the cut-off dates first.
UK skilled worker visa family rules: money families must show
Family members applying from abroad, or in the UK for less than 12 months, must show these funds:
| Applicant | Funds required |
|---|---|
| Partner | £285 (about Rs105,500) |
| First child | £315 (about Rs116,600) |
| Each additional child | £200 (about Rs74,000) |
The money must have been held for at least 28 days, on top of the £1,270 (about Rs470,000) the Skilled Worker needs to show. It can be held by the applicant, the Skilled Worker, or the child’s other parent. Families do not need to show funds if they have all been in the UK on a valid visa for at least 12 months, or if the worker’s A-rated sponsor certifies first-month costs.
For a Pakistani worker taking a spouse and one child, the UK government’s own example puts family funds at £600 (about Rs222,000); with the worker’s own £1,270, the household needs roughly Rs692,000 in the bank for 28 days.
The full cost of bringing a family
Each family member also pays a visa fee and health surcharge: up to three years from outside the UK costs £819 per person, plus usually £1,035 per year. For a spouse on a three-year visa, that is £3,924 (about Rs1.45 million), before the £285 in savings.
Partners in certain occupations must also provide a criminal record certificate from every country where they spent 12 months or more in the last 10 years as an adult. Partners or children already in the UK cannot switch to a dependant visa if they are there as visitors, short-term students, seasonal workers, or domestic workers in a private household.
If approved, a partner’s visa ends with the Skilled Worker’s visa, or runs three years if the worker is being granted settlement; a child’s visa follows the earlier of their parents’ visas unless both parents are settled or British citizens. All dependants can work, except as professional sportspeople or sports coaches, and they can study. They cannot claim public funds.
Part of a wider tightening
The UK has been tightening the Skilled Worker route this year, including plans to reduce qualifying jobs, while easing rules for exploited workers changing employers. For Pakistani applicants, the lesson is to check two things first: whether the job still allows dependants, and whether the family can meet the savings and fee requirements.
