The Higher Education Commission has announced the HEC NSCT 2027 for students in computing and information technology degree programmes across Pakistan. The test will be mandatory for all seventh and eighth semester students in eligible programmes.
HEC has tentatively scheduled the National Skill Competency Test for January 23 and 24, 2027. It will run as a computer-based test at more than 100 locations across the country.
The test is designed to assess the skills and competency levels of students before they finish their degrees. It aims to align university education with the needs of the technology industry and improve the employability of graduates.
Who must take the HEC NSCT 2027
The test applies to students in computing and IT-related degree programmes, including computer science, software engineering, artificial intelligence and data science. All seventh and eighth semester students in these programmes must take part.
The requirement covers main campuses, sub-campuses, constituent colleges and affiliated colleges alike. Students at affiliated institutions are included as well, so the test reaches beyond the main public universities.
What the test measures
The test checks whether a computing graduate has the working knowledge expected of an entry-level IT professional. It covers the core skills of the degree programmes rather than textbook recall. The results will show how ready each student is for work in the technology sector.
HEC developed the test under the prime minister’s directives. It worked with the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, the Pakistan Software Export Board and the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA). HEC says the test will help universities measure how well their teaching matches the demands of the industry.
How the first NSCT ran in 2026
The NSCT is not new. HEC held the first test on April 4 and 5, 2026, across 165 centres in 112 cities, and described it as a major step towards stronger skills assessment for students across Pakistan.
The test is free of charge. Students who perform well receive a joint certificate from HEC, PSEB and P@SHA and join a national talent pool open to local and international employers. They also earn one academic credit and get priority access to internships, apprenticeships and international certification opportunities.
Universities are also ranked on how their students perform, which gives institutions a direct stake in preparing final-year students for the test. Institutions that failed to register students or appoint focal persons risked placement in the lowest performance category.
What it means for students
For final-year students, the test adds a national benchmark to their degree. A strong result puts them in front of employers through the talent pool, while a weak result shows where they need more work before they graduate.
The January dates give students over two months to prepare. HEC has not yet announced registration dates for the 2027 cycle. Students should watch the official NSCT portal for the registration window and the student guide.
The announcement fits a wider push to build IT skills in Pakistan. Pakistan aims to train one million AI professionals by 2030, and Pakistan and China have started 14 skills projects to train young people for technical work. HEC also honoured 23 students this month for winning medals at international science olympiads.
