PSL 12 Auction Framework Agreed With Rs450m Salary Cap

PSL 12 Auction Framework Agreed With Rs450m Salary Cap

All eight franchises in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) have unanimously approved the operational framework for the 12th edition of the tournament. The PSL 12 auction framework covers player retention rules, auction regulations, squad structures and salary caps, the league said on Friday.

The agreements were reached at a tournament operations workshop at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, led by PSL Chief Executive Salman Naseer. The league said further major announcements concerning PSL 12 would be made in the coming weeks.

PSL 12 auction framework: the key dates and caps

The player retention deadline has been set for January 13, 2027. The player auction is scheduled for January 23, 2027, giving franchises ten days to finalise their squads after retentions are confirmed.

Each team will have a salary cap of Rs450 million for the auction. The ceiling will rise to Rs505 million for franchises that make a direct signing for PSL 12, retain their previous season’s direct signing, or do both. Franchises will also be required to spend a minimum of Rs365 million.

The window for direct signings will remain open until November 23, 2026. Each franchise will be allowed to sign one marquee player who did not feature in either the tenth or 11th editions of the competition.

The timing of the retention deadline is designed to let teams assess domestic performers during the National T20 competition. The Silver tournament has been completed, and the Gold tournament is under way, so domestic form can still influence franchise decisions before January 13.

PSL 12 auction framework: retention rules in detail

Each franchise will be permitted to retain a maximum of seven players, including its direct signing. Teams that exercise the full retention allowance must release one player from the highest price category of the previous auction into the general player pool.

That condition is the balancing mechanism in the framework. It stops a strong squad from keeping its entire core intact, while still giving franchises room to build around seven retained players. The released top-category player then enters the auction pool, where rival franchises can bid for a proven performer.

Feature Pakistan reported that the two-season direct-signing condition was upheld at the October 29 workshop, with the same November 23 direct-signing deadline and January 23 auction date. The framework announced on Friday confirms those dates and adds the salary cap, minimum spend and retention numbers that were not in the earlier report.

What Salman Naseer said about the agreement

Naseer said the unanimous agreement reflected constructive engagement between the league and its franchise partners. He stressed the manner of the agreement, not only its content.

“What made today remarkable was not just what was agreed, it was how it was agreed,” Naseer said. “Every franchise engaged with complete openness, the auction rules were worked through line by line, and we finished with unanimous buy-in across all eight sides.”

Why the salary cap structure matters

The gap between the Rs450 million cap and the Rs365 million minimum spend is Rs85 million. That range gives franchises room to plan, but it also sets a floor, so no team can enter the auction with a token squad. The Rs505 million ceiling for teams with a direct signing gives those franchises Rs55 million extra cap room for support players around the marquee name.

The direct-signing window closes first, on November 23. Franchises must therefore decide on their marquee signing before the retention deadline on January 13, and before the auction on January 23.

What comes next for PSL 12

The league said further major announcements would be made in the coming weeks. The next firm dates are the direct-signing deadline on November 23, 2026, the retention deadline on January 13, 2027, and the auction on January 23, 2027.

This will be the league’s second player auction, under rules reviewed and unanimously approved by all eight franchises. For fans, the calendar is now clear: marquee signings first, retentions next, then an auction with a Rs365 million floor and a firm cap.
