KP Seals 1,465 Illegal Medical Centres

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Healthcare Commission has sealed 1,465 illegal medical centres across the province in the last three months, according to its latest performance report. The scale of the action stands out: the three-month sealing total is close to the number sealed in the whole of the previous year.

The commission inspected 6,673 medical facilities during the period. Notices seeking explanations were issued to 2,668 centres over various violations. The report was released on Friday, Dawn reported.

For patients, the figures describe a system in which a large number of facilities operate outside the rules, and a regulator now inspecting at a pace that catches them in large numbers. A sealed centre is one the commission has found to be operating illegally, which in practice means it lacks the registration or licence the law requires. The report does not name the sealed centres or break them down by district, so patients cannot tell from the report alone whether a particular clinic near them was affected.

Illegal medical centres: what the three-month figures show

The headline numbers tell two stories at once. The first is enforcement. Sealing 1,465 centres in three months, after 6,673 inspections, means about one in five inspected facilities was shut. A further 2,668 centres, about two in five of those inspected, were served notices asking them to explain violations.

The second story is the size of the formal system. The commission registered 610 new medical centres during the same three months, taking the total number of registered healthcare facilities in the province to 22,910. At the same time, only 52 centres were granted full licences in the period, taking the total number of fully licensed facilities since 2023 to 326.

That gap between registration and full licensing is worth noting. Registration puts a facility on the commission’s record. A full licence is a further step, and the figures show that only a small share of registered facilities have completed it. The report does not explain the gap, and it would be wrong to read it as proof that every other facility is operating illegally. What it does show is that the licensing process still has a long way to run.

Complaints form the other half of the picture. The commission received 267 public complaints about healthcare services during the three months, and 203 were resolved. Commission spokesperson Azam Rehman said measures were also taken to improve registration and licensing and to address public complaints. Director of operations Arsalan Ahmed Khan said the registration and licensing process aims to ensure quality healthcare services for the public.

How the pace compares with last year

The three-month total looks sharper against the previous year’s figures. In the year from July 2024 to June 2025, the commission inspected 9,100 healthcare establishments and sealed 1,491, while registering 2,397, according to an Associated Press of Pakistan report at the time.

Put side by side, the comparison is stark. The latest quarter alone sealed almost as many centres as the whole previous year, from fewer inspections. The two periods are not identical, and the commission’s own reports do not say whether the latest quarter reflects more illegal facilities, more inspectors, or both. But the direction is clear: enforcement in the province has stepped up, not slowed.
