Kherson Truce Expires With No Extension Agreed

The Kherson truce expires on Sunday evening, with neither side announcing an extension. The pause in fighting, limited to just the Kherson region, was the longest truce of the Ukraine war. It began early on Tuesday and was brokered by United States First Lady Melania Trump.

Neither side reported violations after the truce began. One Ukrainian lawmaker described it as the biggest de-escalation since 2022. The rare pause enabled a humanitarian mission to Russian-occupied Oleshky, across the Dnipro river from Ukrainian-held Kherson city.

A Kherson resident said the ceasefire had been a breath of fresh air. “We have to use this time to get things done,” said Volodymyr Omeltchenko, a 38-year-old gardener. “We are pruning the rose bushes for winter.”

Kherson truce expires: why residents fear what comes next

A Ukrainian military officer warned that fighting could be worse than before when it resumes. Russian forces, positioned on the other side of the Dnipro river, used the calm of the past few days to amass new troops and transport ammunition stocks, the officer said.

That fear shapes the mood in Kherson. A short truce can save lives while it holds, but it can also give both sides time to prepare for the next round. Residents used the pause for ordinary tasks, such as pruning roses and repairing homes, knowing the quiet might not last.

The truce covered only Kherson region. Fighting continued elsewhere in Ukraine throughout the week. The limited scope was part of its design, and part of its limit. It showed that a local pause is possible, but it did not point to a wider ceasefire.

Fighting elsewhere, and a refinery hit

Russia said on Sunday that a drone had struck an industrial enterprise east of Moscow overnight. Ukrainian media reported that Kyiv had attacked the Kstovo oil refinery, calling it one of Russia’s largest oil refineries, producing fuel and lubricants.

Kyiv has repeatedly struck Russian oil and gas sites. Ukraine says such strikes are fair retaliation for Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. The strikes form part of a campaign against Russian fuel supplies, even as ceasefire efforts focus on the front line.

United States President Donald Trump had pressed Kyiv to stop such attacks. He blamed them for rising diesel costs, which analysts attribute to the Iran war. That pressure adds a further strain to Ukraine’s choices, between hitting Russian fuel revenue and holding support from Washington.

This expiry follows Melania Trump brokering the Russia-Ukraine Oleshky ceasefire from October 29, which set out the original pause and its humanitarian mission. It also follows wider ceasefire diplomacy, including Trump announcing a Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire and Pope Leo urging Putin to agree the Oleshky ceasefire. The question now is whether either side will propose a fresh pause, or whether Kherson returns to full-scale fighting along the Dnipro.

For now, the record of the week stands as a narrow success. No violations were reported, a humanitarian mission reached Oleshky, and residents gained a few days of quiet. The expiry of the truce does not erase those gains, but it leaves Kherson facing the same front line, with fresh troops and ammunition on the far bank of the river.
