K-P Senate Elections in March 2027 Face Delay Threat
Senate elections due in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa in March 2027 face a serious threat of postponement if governor’s rule stays in force in the province. Twelve seats from the province, including one minority seat, are due to fall vacant.
The polls are expected in the first week of March next year. Officials indicate that governor’s rule could continue for up to six months, potentially until 10 April 2027. In that case, the March elections could not be held on schedule and would have to be deferred.
Emergency was imposed in 12 districts of the province on 11 October 2026, and governor’s rule was imposed across the remaining 26 districts on the same date. The province now risks a repeat of the 2024 delay, which left the Senate incomplete and K-P under-represented for an extended period.
A repeat of the 2024 delay
In March 2024, elections were due on 11 Senate seats from K-P. The Election Commission of Pakistan deferred them because of disputes over reserved seats and related court cases.
After the 2024 general elections, PTI-backed independents joined the Sunni Ittehad Council to claim reserved seats. The commission refused to allocate those seats to the council and allotted them to other opposition parties instead. Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati declined to administer the oath to the opposition members until a final court decision.
As a result, the assembly lacked a complete quorum, and the commission halted the Senate elections. The dispute stayed in litigation for a prolonged period. On 26 March 2025, a constitutional bench of the Supreme Court upheld the commission’s decision. Reserved-seat members finally took the oath on 20 July 2025, completing the assembly’s quorum.
The commission then fixed 21 July 2025 as the new polling date. At the Jirga Hall in Peshawar, 145 members of the provincial assembly cast their votes. Under a formula agreed between PTI-backed independent candidates and opposition parties, PTI secured six seats, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam two, Pakistan Peoples Party two, and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz one.
Reports of political manoeuvring and alleged horse-trading involving large sums of money had circulated widely before that vote. To avoid controversy, the PTI-led government and opposition parties reached a written political understanding shortly before polling. Members voted according to the agreed formula, and the results matched expectations.
Who retires in March 2027
Twelve senators from K-P are due to complete their six-year terms and retire in March 2027. On the seven general seats, they are Faisal Saleem Rahman, Liaquat Khan Tarakai, Mohsin Aziz, Zeeshan Khanzada and Syed Shibli Faraz of PTI, Maulana Attaur Rahman of JUI-F, and Hidayatullah Khan of the Awami National Party.
On the two technocrat and ulema seats, Muhammad Humayun Mohmand and Dost Muhammad Khan of PTI are due to retire. On the two women’s seats, Falak Naz and Mashal Yousafzai of PTI are due to retire. Yousafzai was elected in place of Sania Nishtar. On the minority seat, Gurdeep Singh of PTI is due to retire.
Senate elections in the rest of the country, Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Islamabad, were completed on 2 April 2024 after half the senators completed their six-year terms. K-P was the exception then, and it could be the exception again.
Why a delay would matter
A postponement would leave K-P short of its full voice in the upper house at a time when the province is already under governor’s rule. Senate votes on legislation, resolutions and constitutional matters would proceed without the province’s full contingent of 12 members, or with retiring members held over beyond their terms until polls can be held.
The 2024 precedent shows how long such a gap can last. Between the original March 2024 date and the eventual July 2025 polls, 16 months passed. During that period, the Senate was incomplete and K-P’s representation was partial.
The immediate question is therefore one of timing. If governor’s rule ends before March, the polls can proceed on schedule. If it runs into the spring of 2027, the province once again faces delayed Senate elections and incomplete representation in the upper house.
When are the K-P Senate elections due?
The polls are expected in the first week of March 2027, when 12 seats from the province fall vacant, including one minority seat.
Why were the 2024 K-P Senate elections delayed?
The Election Commission deferred the March 2024 polls because of disputes over reserved seats. Members elected on reserved seats had not taken the oath, so the assembly lacked a complete quorum. The polls were eventually held on 21 July 2025.
