KSE-100 Gains 1,428 Points to Close at 164,467

The KSE-100 October 27 session closed at 164,467.20 points, up 1,428.73 points or 0.88 percent from 163,038.47 points at the previous close, continuing its bullish run, as reported by UrduPoint, carrying an Associated Press of Pakistan report.

The ready market saw trading volume of 401.969 million shares, up from 376.019 million shares in the previous session. Traded value rose to Rs18.069 billion from Rs16.192 billion, a sign that more money entered the market alongside the higher index.

KSE-100 October 27: breadth and value

Market breadth was positive on the day. Out of 497 companies that traded in the ready market, 282 posted gains, 170 suffered losses, and 45 remained unchanged.

Market capitalisation rose to Rs18.214 trillion from Rs18.061 trillion a day earlier. That increase of about Rs153 billion shows that the value of listed companies grew in step with the index, rather than on a narrow set of shares alone.

K-Electric led the volume chart with 54.027 million shares traded. Cnergyico PK followed with 30.699 million shares, while WorldCall Telecom traded 24.034 million shares.

Among the top gainers, Ghandhara Industries surged by Rs96.47 to close at Rs1,061.16. Pakistan Tobacco Company advanced by Rs73.63 to settle at Rs1,473.58.

On the losing side, Rafhan Maize Products declined by Rs162.81 to close at Rs8,337.19. Khairpur Sugar Mills fell by Rs139.98 to Rs1,259.84.

Futures market also rose

Activity in the futures market was also strong. Turnover in the deliverable futures market stood at 455.777 million shares, with a traded value of Rs14.653 billion, compared with 339.047 million shares worth Rs9.357 billion in the previous session. Out of 313 companies traded in the futures market, 247 advanced, 63 declined and three remained unchanged.

Why the market rose

The gain came against a clear policy backdrop. The State Bank of Pakistan raised its policy rate by 50 basis points to 12 percent at its third monetary policy meeting of the current fiscal year, a decision covered in Feature Pakistan’s earlier reporting.

Investors often react with caution to a rate hike, since higher rates raise borrowing costs for companies. In this session, however, buying continued, and the market closed higher for a second session in a row.

On the previous day, the KSE-100 had gained 663.59 points to close at 163,038.47. The October 27 gain of 1,428.73 points was more than double that rise, and it took the index to a fresh level above 164,400.

Easing oil prices and hopes of progress in Middle East diplomacy have also supported sentiment in recent sessions, according to market reporting. For Pakistani investors, lower oil prices matter because Pakistan imports much of its fuel, and oil costs feed into inflation and into company costs.

What happens next

A single strong session does not set a trend on its own. Investors will watch the next few sessions to see whether the index can hold above 164,000, and whether volumes stay high.

They will also watch company results, inflation data, and the next signals from the State Bank. If buying stays broad, with more shares rising than falling, the market will have a firmer base. If gains narrow to a few heavyweight shares, the rally will be more fragile.

For now, October 27 was a strong day for the Pakistan Stock Exchange. The index rose, volumes rose, value rose, and most traded companies ended the day higher.
